3 things you should do in Billings before summer ends

    things to do in billings

Although we’re only in the early stages of summer, it will be gone before you know it. And many of the best things to do in Billings are best done in the sunshine and warm temperatures. So, we uncovered three things you need to do here in the great city of Billings before the summer season ends.

    Get the blues

August – it’s Magic City Blues Festival time — and this year it’s going to be brilliant. Thursday, August 3 is a free show, featuring Victor Wainwright and the Wild Roots. It’s an all-ages show, so bring the kids if you like.

Although the lineup for Friday (18+ only) is excellent, they’ve saved the best for last because at 10:30 p.m. Brian Setzer takes to the stage. Rockabillying around the world on his Rockabilly Riot tour, Billings is but one of his stops.

Then, if you decide to go to the fest on Saturday night, get there before 8:30 and head straight for the Budweiser Stage. ZZ Ward hits it HARD at 8:30. “Put the Gun Down” makes her officially America’s answer to Adele (at least the answer to “Rollin’ in the Deep.”).

    Float the Yellowstone River

Next up, grab a tube and head to Riverfront Park. Come on, the water isn’t THAT cold, especially if you wait until late this month or next. But starting tomorrow – with temperatures hitting over the century mark – that water will beckon.

So, take a day off work. Not only will it be less crowded, but the mental health benefits of the river’s water, the sun and knowing that you’re relaxing instead of working will make you feel like you hit the trifecta.

From Riverfront Park you can tube to Josephine Park or Coulson Park and, if you have the time, all the way to Two Moon Park. The takeaway? Billings looks entirely different from out on the river.

Make sure everyone is wearing a life jacket and never swim in the river. In fact, watch this video before taking to the Yellowstone River.

Enjoy a ballgame at Dehler Park

Finally, head out to Dehler Park and join about 2,500 other fans as the Mustangs take the field. They’re doing pretty good so far this season, (9-5) and most recently (as of this writing) they took the series victory over the Great Falls Voyagers with a 4-2 win last Sunday.

There are still plenty of upcoming home games before baseball season ends and football season beings. There are some cool promotions going on too, such as the nine Samsung Blu-Ray players that the Mustangs will give away on July 14, prizes and giveaways compliments of the merchants of the Downtown Billings Alliance on July 17, free helmets for kids (courtesy of the The Brain Injury Alliance of Montana) on August 7 and the Mega Candy Drop after the game on the 20th of August (1,000 pounds of candy dropped from a helicopter for the kids to pick up).

Home games happen from the 12th to the 18th and the 28th to the 30th of this month. For the rest of the schedule, visit their website.
