Annoying things to expect while your home is on the market

If nobody has told you yet, let me be the first: selling a home is inconvenient. At times, it’s downright annoying. The whole process may seem to drag on forever and, like pregnancy, you Just.Want.It.To.End.

I’ve always found it easier to deal with some of life’s more annoying aspects if you go into the process armed with knowledge. Now, I’m not trying to scare you off the home sale process – on the contrary. Take a look at some of the following annoyances so that, if they happen, you won’t be caught off guard.

Having to keep the house clean all the time

If you listed your home with me you know the importance I place on cleaning. There’s a reason I feel this way: your home will sell for more if it’s clean. In fact, according to a HomeGain study, cleaning and decluttering your home may help you realize an additional $1500 to $2000 on your final price.

Clean homes raise a home’s perceived value – buyers think they are worth more and are willing to pay more for them. So, yeah, having to keep the house clean all the time is annoying, but it will pay off in the end.

Deciding what to do with the pets

Home sellers with pets find the marketing period particularly challenging. What will you do with them during showings? From crating them to boarding them, there are plenty of suggestions on what to do with pets. A friend of mine, an agent in Wisconsin, has a handy blog post on her website with some tips. Not knowing when you’ll be moving

Uncertainty affects some of us more than others. Unfortunately, uncertainty is inherent when you live in a home for sale. When will it sell? Then, when will I have to move? The urge is to get everything packed up and schedule movers but you really can’t do that when you don’t know the answers to those questions.

Relax. You’ll have plenty of time to get everything done. In fact, if you need more time than what the buyer is willing to give you, we can request an extension of escrow or even ask for a rent-back after closing.

Last-minute showings

They happen during dinner, they happen on the weekend when you’re anchored in front of the TV, watching the game. Showings of the home are often intrusive on your personal time. The nature of the beast, really. And, yes, highly annoying, especially when the buyer’s agent wants to show the home on short notice.

Being flexible, accommodating these requests is important. You never know – this just may be the buyer who falls in love with your home.

Or, maybe it’ll be the buyer who doesn’t show up

Having a home on the market may turn you into someone who believes all human beings are flakes. They’re not, of course, but after several fevered house cleanings to accommodate a buyer visit and then having them no-show on you, it’s easy to come away with that assumption.

Yes, buyers’ agents will set appointments and then cancel. Some will even not bother cancelling. Again, it’s the nature of the beast, so don’t be surprised if it happens.

Doors may be left unlocked

When I show homes to my buying clients the last thing I do before heading out the front door is to check every single door to the home’s exterior to ensure they are locked. Not all agents do this, however, so don’t be shocked (it’s quite alright to be angry, though) to find an unlocked door after a showing.

During the time your home is on the market you may come home to find items moved around on table or dresser tops, your bathroom hand-towel wadded in a bunch on the counter, beds rumpled (kids are typically the culprits here) and lights left on.

Then, you may receive feedback that hurts your feelings, such as criticism about your decorating taste, housekeeping, the home’s layout and any number of things.

Take a deep breath, count to whatever number calms you and relax. It’s only temporary. Before you know it, I’ll have that home in escrow and you can go back to leaving piles of dirty clothes in the laundry room and the lid up on the potty.
