Giving back to Billings: Hope for Homeless Pets

    pet adoptions in billings

Late last month, we ushered in spring – a time of hope and new beginnings. If one of your “new starts” includes giving back to the community we’ve got the perfect place to start: Hope for Homeless Pets.

Running an animal shelter is a huge undertaking, yet HHP has been doing it for nearly 20 years. Run by volunteers, with no funding from the city, county, state or federal governments, the group relies on donations from area residents. HHP is a no-kill, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, which means your donations are tax deductible. You can even donate online, by clicking here.

    More than money

Not all of us who would like to help can dash off a check to our favorite charity. What many don’t realize, however, is that groups such as HHP need more than money – they need your time. Volunteering your time is one of the most personally rewarding ways of giving back to Billings.

The group’s most pressing needs right now include volunteers to:

    • Care for the cats and dogs (grooming, bathing, taking photos, etc.)
    • Cleaning
    • Handyman (or woman!) services
    • Run errands
    • Answer phone calls
    • Assist with special events, such as adoptathons
    • Animal transportation

    Become a furry foster parent

From rescue to a forever home is a period of time when animals need the most help. Acclimating them to homes, socializing with other pets and/or human beings and proving to them that people aren’t all that bad is a much-needed service. And, it typically involves foster families. Talk about rewarding! Although it is sometimes quite hard to give up a foster, knowing that you’ve saved a life and helped speed it down the road to a new family is one of the best ways for an animal lover to help. If you’re interested in fostering, call 406-860-8735.

    Additional ways to help

Use Amazon Smile and every time you shop on Amazon the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5 percent of the price of eligible purchases to your designated charity. You can designate HHP by clicking on the “Get Started” button, here.

Shop online from participating retailers (such as Barnes & Noble, eBay, Overstock.com and more than 300 others) and up to 35 percent of the proceeds will go to Help for Homeless Pets. You’ll need to designate HHP as your chosen charity and you can get started by clicking “Buy for Charity” here.

Become a Pet Angel by sponsoring a dog or cat for a spay or neuter or vaccinations. You can either choose the pet you want to sponsor or allow the organization to choose one for you.

Adopt a pet. HHP currently has two adorable pomeranian/chihuahua kids (one male, one female) who were abandoned and, for five years, survived by scavenging deer carcasses. Today they are in perfect health and completely socialized. It would be amazing if this bonded pair could be adopted together.

They also have lots of kitties available for adoption. Check out the list of available pets here.

Giving back to the communities we serve is important to all of us here at Realty Billings. If you would like us to feature a local cause that is near and dear to you, let us know!
